The theme of the dangers of technology has existed since Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and the rise of the factory during the Industrial Revolution.
In film, the postmodern era occurred around the time when the Japanese economy boomed during the 80s, and Blade Runner came out. The dangers of technology were prevalent, such as human looking robots. What is a statue or a picture of a human even? Is that not considered the same? (I believe I read somewhere that humans were confused at first when this happened.
What if a statue like a tree had a brain? Trees have bodies and cells.
What is the brain and memory really? Maybe this was a commentary on US fears of the Japanese economy during the Reagan era? The allegory of the cave is present here and the world that you experience is your world.
The Major is a model, both in terms of item type, such as car models, and feminine representation, such as car models!
What is human?
And of course, Japan is beautiful thanks to Mamoru Oshii.
